Harvesting Connections
The program of my project revolves around the creation of a cohesive network of farms in the local and semi-local regions of Berwick, East Sussex, UK. By leveraging the profession of farming, I aim to establish strong connections and foster collaboration among existing farms in the area. At the heart of this endeavour, I developed a research centre /farm facility, serving as the central hub for this network.
The envisioned research/farm will play a pivotal role in facilitating connectivity and knowledge exchange among farmers in the region. It will serve as a catalyst for innovation, providing a platform for sharing best practices, exploring sustainable farming techniques, and conducting research on advancements in agricultural technology. This collaborative environment will empower farmers to collectively address challenges and optimize the overall efficiency and productivity of their operations. By connecting local and semi-local farms through this central research/farm facility, my project seeks to establish a robust network that transcends traditional boundaries and fosters a sense of community and cooperation within the farming community. This interconnectedness will enable farmers to overcome individual limitations, tap into shared resources, and collectively respond to market demands and environmental concerns.
Fostering Collaboration and Sustainability in Berwick’s Farming Community
The focus of my project is the rejuvenation of an existing farm, which currently comprises a farmhouse, a chicken coup, and barn-like structures constructed using different materials such as flint, brick, and concrete blocks. My proposal aims to integrate and repurpose these individual spaces, namely the T-shaped barn, flint barn, modern farm, and outbuilding, into a unified space with three distinct functions: workspace, leisure/market space, and residential accommodation. To begin with, the farmhouse will retain its original purpose, but with necessary alterations to create additional space. The aim is to maximize the potential of the farmhouse by accommodating more occupants, specifically targeting permanent farmers who will reside there. This will involve thoughtful redesign and expansion of the farmhouse to ensure it meets the requirements of multiple individuals and provides a comfortable living environment. Additionally, the existing residential house on the farm will undergo a transformation into an Airbnb guest house. To accommodate the needs of guests, the house will be extended and include a communal space where individuals can gather and interact. This will enhance the overall guest experience and make the farm an attractive destination for visitors seeking a unique and immersive rural stay. Moreover, the industrial chicken shed will be repurposed into a large greenhouse, specifically designed to function as a plant nursery. This conversion will enable the cultivation of a diverse range of plants in a controlled and optimized environment. The greenhouse will contribute to sustainable farming practices, fostering the growth of various crops and supporting the farm’s overall productivity. Lastly, the garage space will be transformed into a dedicated germination room, where careful monitoring and control of growth conditions will take place. This room will provide an ideal environment for the initial stages of crop development, ensuring healthy and robust plants before their transfer to other areas of the farm. By undertaking these innovative transformations, the rejuvenated farm will showcase a harmonious blend of functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. The integration of diverse spaces and the repurposing of existing structures will not only optimize resource utilization but also create an inviting and dynamic environment suitable for work, leisure, and agricultural pursuits.
