CIRCULAR CONSTRUCTS: An architectural investigation into the possibilities of re-centring places of gathering, in cylindrical form, within the margins of a Sussex town
I have become fascinated by the possibilities of collected public gathering spaces, in cylindrical form: asking in what ways people might be brought together as part of a collective experience whilst balancing spatial issues of proximity and distance? In Lewes, various marginal sites are investigated as potential locations. Light, space, materiality and environment are critical design factors.
Sequence 1: Exploring the possibilities of meeting in steam
Looking at how a collection of steam filled spaces might be brought together. Evolved through various iterations to arrive at a solution where by steam chambers are raised off the ground, with supporting facilities below.
Sequence 2: Exploring the possibilities of meeting with books – a Library of Revolutions
How might cylindrical forms become gathering spaces for reading and books? Cylinders are straightened and extended in vertical space with levels connected by spiral staircase.
Sequence 3: Exploring the possibilities of just meeting
A condensation of thoughts, ideas and discoveries. Looking at the possibilities of bringing people together simply for meetings, but on a smaller scale, with a more modest practical approach.
