Studio 14: 21-22
Untitled (Gatherings…)
Studio 14 this year explored the southern margins and hinterlands of Lewes, where we speculated on the possibilities of establishing new ‘places of gathering’. After the pandemic, as we slowly returned to something approaching normal, it seemed only appropriate that we reconsider the nature of ‘gathering’ and critically who, or what is included, or excluded.
Undertaking a series of walked excursions, we observed the left out, the things and people edged out, disenfranchised, or displaced. We discussed the rights of public access to the landscape. The recent ‘mass trespass’ within the South Downs National Park demonstrating the relevance of this matter.
There was no specific brief, or site location. Design projects were individually evolved yet with a collective concern for inclusivity, locality, speciality, materiality, and the making of place. There was no prescribed studio style. Students were encouraged to develop their own ways of working whilst drawing upon essential understandings of architecture as a discipline; learning from both its historical basis, and its contemporary practice.
We might say that our studio takes a late romantic approach to architecture; one concerned with imagination, art, nature, and our experience of the world.
