Tracy Affleck
I have worked for many years with found photographs and objects. I acquire these through various sources including auction houses, fleamarkets, ebay and charity shops. Similar to the approach of some surrealists such as Andre Breton, I then use these found images as a starting points of inspiration for my creative practice. Through an experimental process of copying, repetition, splicing, joining, cut and paste, re-editing, drawing and redrawing (whether in light or physical material) I seek to change the original nostalgic referent into something ‘other’ a different landscape of meaning and a vehicle to approach complex subjects such as time, family history, memory and photography as a discourse.
I consider my work to have a level of automatism whereby I try not to consciously plan or project meaning but through the act of ‘divination’ use found images and objects as starting points for interrogation which I hope will then lead to unfamiliar outcomes – something outside of my understanding or control. I would say my work is experimental and constantly changing- a travelling museum of ideas, but always on the edge of collapse. A ‘failed time machine’.
More recently I have been incorporating experimental music to sit alongside my visual practice. This extra narrative, I hope, will add another layer of personal expression and meaning to the work.
