Two themes are key to my work. These are communication and ambiguity.
Language is our tool of communication. Words are what constitute our minds, being the pilot of comprehension. Painting is a medium of regurgitating my mind, so words are an important part to include.
Much like paintings, words represent things, categorizing the world into definitive symbols. In whatever language, they are anecdotes of evolution. They are emblems of the collective.
Without the collective none of us could exist. The strength of the collective is based on how well we communicate. My work intends to honestly communicate my experience, becoming a relatable expression of being human.
Art is a medium of communicating and exchanging experience. This is the experience of making the work, and the experience of the work. If the process of creation is exciting so will the outcome.
Ambiguity conflicts the communication channel, scrambling anything truly obvious to pin it down. Out-of-place words, strange objects, and illusory effects are all techniques to put the piece at constant odds with itself.
By collaging bits I’ve read, things on TV, and random thoughts or observations, without preconceptions other than to make something provoking, the work becomes intriguing, distracting you, if only briefly.
Immediately, my work seems loud, bombastic, and in-your-face; at second glance, it seems to be a confusing jumble of words, with no meaning, like a poem you don’t get; then finally, some idea is lifted out of the mayhem, and one creates an interpretation, hopefully igniting a sort of excitement.
