Rosie Penny
I am a visual artist, writer and researcher. My work revolves around trying to understand myself, and my relation to others, by examining visual culture. This has led to a keen interest in representation, specifically the representation of identity, reality and knowledge, otherwise known as truth.
In my final year I have written a dissertation titled Art Sex Knowledge Power. I analyse the female nude to track how art has influenced our perception of sexuality in the West. This raises questions like: Who controls what’s considered sexually desirable? Do we place more value in sex or appearing sexually desirable? How do sexism and racism influence our idea of sexuality? To tie this project into the visual world I have formatted the essay into a zine which you can pick up and read at the grad show.
Foucault’s theory of power was central to this project. By understanding how knowledge is subjective and formed by different institutions, such as art, I can see how art and visual culture has a real world effect on the way we live collectively and as individuals. I’m interested in researching this relationship further in my practise.
