BA(Hons) Illustration
Illustration: Seneca Village by Imogen Donegan
The course is one of the oldest illustration degrees in the United Kingdom so has a rich tradition of graduates with a reputation for individual creative voices. Known for being multi-disciplinary and experimental the students are conversive across different media, and orientate their practice across many areas of visual communication including; iIlustration, art direction, motion graphics, photography, design, research, film, animation, and into the wider artworld.
Combining the ability to respond to project briefs alongside self-authoring work, students not only work in mainstream media but are exploring the boundaries of the discipline, to help prepare themselves wherever they position their emerging practice in the professional world.
The course celebrates both the traditional and the contemporary, exploring what illustration could be, not just what it is, in an ever-changing professional landscape. We place an emphasis on experimentation and visual play, to enable students to gain confidence, be reflective learners, to help develop their own visual language, through content and subject matter, and to identify an appropriate audience for their work.
The return to campus for the 2022 graduates has enabled many to materially push their work, use workshops and facilities, to test ideas collectively in the safe space offered by the studio. This year a greater number of students used the Variable Assessment opportunity in the final module to tap into their individual strengths, for some to continue writing as part of their work, which has been exciting to see being established, demonstrating wider research contexts to their creative practices.
This year we have the return of a physical show at Grand Parade, alongside another student lead London exhibition that Level 6 students have been fundraising all year for entitled @despiteitall_22 so lots to look forward to.
Myself and the staff team wish you well – congratulations!
