Oriana Yates-Butcher
My work considers the relationship between the material and the maker, a collaboration showing and sharing mutual respect and understanding, intuitively adjusting the process and method to allow the work to develop, grow, evolve and be visually stimulating.
The materials are reliant on each other, as am I, creating a repetitive, meditative, ritual like way of working. Concealing, revealing, distorting, layering, order, chaos, contradictions, are all elements bundled together in my sculptural objects. Through my art I visualise feelings I cannot verbalise, I am driven and motivated by the process, interactions and conversations which take place while creating.
My current body of work predominantly combines experimental play using a 3D pen and melted wax. I am constantly building up and taking away, all while these objects are taking on a life of their own. These pieces have a certain stillness to them, perhaps a vulnerability or even a fragility, a sense awkwardness, an unknowing yet what is also present is a stance of confidence, a self belief. Some of my pieces possess a real thuggish brutality with suggested shapes thrusting upwards, grotesque, moulded, lumpy parts and a fleshiness, like exposed bones, or vein like qualities, making the viewer almost repulsed, uneasy yet possibly intrigued.
