Hidden Spa
Studio 11 focuses on ‘Contact’ and 3 lenses; ‘sensory lens’ (feeling-seeing), ‘architectural lens’ (tangible-intangible) and ‘relational lens’ (the present-the present doesn’t exist).
My proposal is located in Phoenix Industrial Estate, Lewes. The Lewes area is prone to environmental damage through flooding, however, to reduce the effect the proposal uses rainwater within the building in many ways, such as; water-walls, ponds, landscape roof structures and steel columns. The underground water tank collects the rest of the rainwater on site which then is recycled through a filter and is used within the spa for pools and plumbing.
The proposal is also repurposing the existing building by re-using the existing steel structure and materials on site which decreases the carbon emissions and it also constructs another meaning for these materials as it builds upon and links original architecture developments with new ones.
The definition behind ‘hidden’ is that the spa is surrounded by nature and hanging plants that create a private environment. Also, the entrance to the spa is from the back through the forest, allowing the client to shift from everyday life to a calming environment. It is a journey itself to get to the entrance, further emphasising this significance.
