Markus Taylor
‘Revolting Body; Archaeology of a Disease’, 2022.
Markus Taylor creates a dialogue between human physiology and the physical environment.
His work confronts the viewer with how human disease can be seen to mirror the visceral physicality of environmental damage.
In June 2021, the artist was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, an incurable blood cancer. A shattering experience, but also a catalyst imparting authority to Taylor’s mining of physical and psychological challenge.
Sickness is disempowerment. Medical intervention is disempowerment. Taylor’s cellular installations, ‘Extraction’ and ‘Exposure’, are retaliatory; reclaiming ownership of the body and self.
In his multi-disciplinary practice, Taylor draws on history through the use of the socio-political resonance of natural and man-made materials.
(The exhibition was made possible with the support and expertise of the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research Team at Brighton and Sussex Medical School)
