Lucy Tully
I am a textiles designer specialising in printed textiles with a love for bright colour, bold patterns and florals. My final Project is called ‘Perpetual Transfiguration’.
Perpetual Transfiguration is a collection of printed textiles designed for high-end womenswear S/S 23.
The collection is the study of the British butterfly and its associated plants through an exploration of a variety of cloth, colour, pattern and print process. I decided to study this subject because the British Butterfly is in decline due to climate change therefore I wanted to celebrate the butterfly and the floral as it exists today, in all its different forms.
‘Perpetual’
– occurring repeatedly; so frequent as to seem endless and uninterrupted.
‘Transfiguration’
– a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state.
These words encapsulate my collection as they describe the lifecycle of the butterfly and the floral; they go through a repeated change of state as they evolve until they create an entirely new form.
The collection is divided into five different styles and themes; the main collection; Tidal; Sketch; Blur and Linear. These five groups mirror the lifecycle of the floral and the butterfly as I use floral and butterfly motifs in different forms of design, colour, pattern and cloth, echoing the varied forms of the butterfly and the floral.
Traditional butterfly and floral motifs have inspired my designs such as the Cinq à Sept S/S 22 collection as well as more abstract, contemporary art such as Damien Hirst’s butterflies in repeated patterns. I have also been heavily influenced by the large scale, flowing butterfly wing and floral prints from the Alberta Ferreti S/S 22 collection and the abstract, vibrant florals from the Dries Van Noten S/S 22 collection. By combining both traditional and abstract design I have created an elegant yet bold and fresh collection, perfectly depicting the butterfly.
I have used lightweight, soft, flowing materials such as silks, cotton and linen to emulate the delicacy and elegance of the butterfly and the floral and in consideration of the need for breathable material for the spring/summer season.
The collection encapsulates a variety of strong and bold colour, embodying the vast, vibrant colours of the butterfly and the floral.
