Julia Jolliffe
I am a multi-disciplinary artist interested predominantly in the consumption of digital media and its effect on the human mind. I work primarily in moving image but have recently been exploring interactive technologies as a way to bring audience perspective into my work.
‘Aliens Exist(?)’ is a moving image piece of world building which explores fiction-making, systems of communication and the importance of language in shaping personal and universal ideas of reality.
The second piece I am showing relates to my interest in digital media consumption. The work is called ‘Project as Televised’. The title relates to my research into media introjection and the ‘reality TV-ification’ of the contemporary experience. Specifically a quote from James Yood on Ed Paschke in an essay titled ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’, “(Paschke is) …showing us snippets of lives experienced as televised…”. I applied this to my struggle to process my own lived experiences at first hand rather than through the lens of the media which I consume. The film is a short story about ‘art-block’ and how sometimes this weird contemporary, digital-age version of self-perception which I am cursed with can be a tool for creativity and idea-generation.
