Judy Hirshorn
My work as a painter wrestles with visual imagery that conveys deeply felt emotion, often beyond the reach of words.
Much of my current practice reflects upon the conditions of chaos and contingency produced by the pandemic and by war.
I call these works ‘landscrapes’, in recognition of the layers of cultural and historical memory contained within. They are concerned with universal themes, such as loss and dislocation.
My subject-matter is often sombre. But I see painting as an act of hope: a celebration of art’s continuous ability to reimagine and communicate what it means to be human.
