Jojo Britnell
Jojo Britnell is a multidisciplinary artist working with paint, sculpture, puppetry, performance and sound. Fascinated by the unconscious mind and images presented to her in dreams, she uses visions from these realms as the foundation of her work, translating their messages to synthesise a vision of personal and cosmological symbolism, as well as an idiosyncratic mythology that is both obscure and familiar.
“When creating I strive to produce from that in between, mystifying and intangible space that exists between worlds. It is a ritualistic process of creating, where it feels as though something is coming through me and puppeteering my hands. I am initially bewildered, intrigued and mystified by where the forms and ideas have come from, but get to know them as friends and help them evolve into a tangible existence”
Besides these otherworldly influences, her work is inspired broadly from childhood memories, to esoteric phenomena, patterns and shapes in the floral and insect kingdoms, as well as her own psychological experiences that have been supernatural at times.
After a lifetime passion for painting, Jojo in more recent years has discovered performance as an output for her work. Appreciating the enchantment and novelty of putting on a show, she uses this medium as a way to communicate and engage directly with the audience her surreal visions. Working in this form she is able to unify her multidisciplinary practice; sculpture, puppetry, painting, storytelling, poetry, performance and sound.
