Emma Gibson

Inspired by the abandoned mining town of Kolmanskop in Namibia, with its empty sand devoured buildings and eerie doorways. ‘Vacant’ is a womenswear collection that explores deconstruction of classic workwear pieces and the repurposing of basic garments and their interior structures.

Taking inspiration from this neglected town and photographers; Corrine Day and Jurgen Teller, the collection established a natural, raw and unrefined style. The extensive experimenting, deconstructing and layering of basic workwear pieces, helped create the nomadic and unappreciated style of the collection. Sustainability also plays a key role in this collection, with a number of garments being created using scraps and left over fabric from other looks. With inspiration from artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s and experimenting with hand drawn print work, in look three, this helps encompass this feeling of forgotten pieces and disconnect.
