Emma Gard
Studio 24
A womenswear collection inspired by the shapes created in 1960’s interiors, developed into paper flats and manipulated on the stand to inform design, spacesuit elements that developed soft tubular collection details, designers influenced by space including Larry Legaspi and Pierre Cardin and disco fashion silhouettes of the 1970’s.
Informing Design
I developed the 3d shapes from my interior research into paper flats and manipulated them onto the stand to inform ideas for my designs, also considering the styles of disco fashion in the 70’s and designers influenced by space. I worked my shapes onto a full scale body through drawing to form look inspiration and create realistic designs.
Look Development
Reflecting on modern influences, I developed my designs to 3d through trial and error in half and full scale. Some looks had unusual and large pattern pieces, I trialled these in Clo3d to develop my patterns sustainably. I also researched construction techniques such as a corset to assist heavier pieces in keeping their form.
Outcomes
Look one ‘disco dress’ is a tiered lurex evening gown with soft tube hems and polysilk duchess with padded rubbing. Look two ‘space cape’ is a polysilk duchess cape with quilted tube cuffs and edging over a twisted bandeau and dipped waist flared trousers. Look three ‘halter dance dress’ has a padded ribbing polysilk duchess halter collar with draped lurex and soft tube hems. Finally, look 4 ‘sharp jumpsuit’ is bonded lurex with sharp shoulders and arm cut outs into a velvet lurex flared jumpsuit. Each look is photographed in a paparazzi style on location.
Styling
Inspired by 70’s icons Cher and Bianca Jagger, wearing chunky platform heels and fun hats, colourful eyeshadow and long lashes, my character represents the fun party girls seen inside the club Studio 54.
