Beccy Bloomfield
I believe that objects and places hold experience. Like us, they exist within their own timelines which shape their physicality. Events to which they have borne witness influence their appearance and presence.
My practice is primarily process led. By exploration through materials, I seek to gain a deeper connection with my subject. Unlocking secrets, past and future, my own lived experience, as a woman, mother and grandmother unavoidably intertwined.
Frottage and direct contact printing are central to my practice. Through close contact and touch I can reveal properties unobtainable by traditional drawing alone.
Back and forth, by layering and peeling back, I am lead down different paths. In both two and three dimensions, my work can take on many forms.
My current enquiry is a direct response to the death of a tree. This tree has remained my constant for more than two decades, overseeing and participating in family life.
By reacting to and recording it’s presence, change and decomposition, this previously domesticated tree is now being memorialised.
Though deeply personal, this work has a wider resonance, sitting within the vast field of research into temporal understandings. From our postmodern acceleration and environmental destruction, right back to ancient man’s essential arboreal connection, trees have been and will remain a continuous inspiration.
I am now working in collaboration with my tree, exploring the relationship between, it, my family and me.
