Sam Pattman
Visually I am captivated by the rugged elements of texture and the way in which rudimentary marks can portray a narrative; the imagination can describe that not visible.
The diverse structures of geological formations, layers of rock embedded with fossils, the forces of creation and timelines untold. I am both process and subject-led, bearing witness to the ancient, a great proportion of my work being intuitive.
I have always held a fascination for the mysticism of previous classical civilisations; peeling plaster of antiquity, the ancient discoveries of archaeological sites. The Turin shroud is enchanting in its depiction of a previous existence and its transience influential in my work.
I am a multidisciplinary artist, though predominantly a painter and printmaker, creating figurative work of a textural nature. I additionally experiment expressively with varying materials, such as clay, plaster, fabric and wood to construct sculptural work.
My process of painting often involves the application of multiple layers of paint, either by, brush or roller to create a semi-obscured ethereal surface, to facilitate curiosity of the unseen. I frequently remove areas of paint to expose the underlying textures in a process synonymous with an archaeological dig.
Through traces and impressions of ghostly figures I aim to suggest a portrayal of what might have gone before. I strive to convey introspective and melancholic nebulous spirituality, equivalent with mortality and loss, traces of existence.
Though my work is sometimes described as ‘dark’, I seek to be able to interpret my personal experiences within it, in a way in which others can relate.
In the words of Carl Jung,
‘One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making
the darkness conscious’.
C. Jung, The Philosophy tree, collected works 13, Alchemical studies, paragraph
