Theo Brotherton-Ratcliffe
Theo Brotherton-Ratcliffe is a moving image filmmaker living and working in Brighton. His work often attempts to unpick human communication, gesture, movement, technical and filmic processes and social and personal conventions through the lens of humour, repetition and absurdness. He almost always uses himself in his videos and often multiple versions of himself, creating a surreal but humorous atmosphere. His works are playful and whimsical but with strong and thought provoking themes running through them.
Effing and Aahing shows a pair of dopplegangers having a hard time getting their words out at dinner. It seeks to look at the absurdness of language, words, sounds, gesture and movement by breaking these phenomena down to the atomic level and building them back up again through repetition, disorder and chaos.
Gestures to Prepare You for the Future is a tongue-in-cheek rendition of 1950’s PSA videos and older generations predictions of the future. It is a light hearted but anxiety fuelled take on an alarmingly near future whilst also seeking to look at the way language, communication and society changes over time in regards to something as simple as a gesture.
