The female figure and contemporary feminism are consistent themes within my practice. The subject matter of my work is inspired by relevant issues of female oppression and inequality, primarily those imposed by religious teachings. Rape culture, violence against women and the stigmas against abortion all find origins in Biblical scripture, and this notion has inspired the use of Biblical iconography in my work. Using moving image and audio-visual media as my main ways of making I combine photography, animation and sound. Through my use of sound I am able to emphasise the emotive impact of the visual, with methods of synchronisation and effectual sound-image relationships.
My work from earlier in year explores themes of censorship and the sexualisation of the body that this gives rise to. From 21st century online censorship of the female nude, to the censorship of women throughout the history of cinema, the resulting stigmatisation of female sexuality has a detrimental impact on bodily autonomy and women’s rights.
