Silverhill is an imagined ward within the parliamentary constituency of Hastings & Rye. The south section of Battle Road acts as a dividing line between Silverhill and its neighbouring ward of Wishing Tree, yet it is unmarked as such, and is mostly an unacknowledged space by the local authority. Shops are boarded up, businesses closed down as a result of the pandemic and lack of investment, and anti-social behaviour, drug dealing and even reports of human trafficking are rife on this troubled piece of road. The demographic, geography and topography of Battle Road determines its own outcomes as residents vote in their council member every two years in the local elections and every four years in the general elections.
The series examines the relationship between man and place, visually exploring spaces along Battle Road as a site of investment for ideas and alternative narratives as well as a metaphoric analysis of how urban peripheries and edgelands write their own stories in whatever political climate they might exist in.
