In this year’s Global Free Unit, the studio is focussing and highlighting refugees entering the UK, and specifically in Kent. The studio starts by researching and understanding their journey and how they arrive to the UK, and also getting information about how they settle in Kent. Having the Kent Refugee Action Network, as clients we worked to design and create spaces for refugees to use within the facility. The main theme of this project that I researched and focussed on, was identity. Looking into the identity of the place and the refugees using this facility, research was made in the beginning to understand who these people were and why they are fleeing their countries, and how was identity expressed in their culture. After this research a common style in design and culture was found, which is the Islamic art and architecture. Using this style helped express those identities in KRAN and these elements were used throughout the design.
