"The material is both the structure, the enclosure and its openings, the finish and its
inherent decoration.”
- Diego Arraigada
Mashrabija is a documentary of the Maltese Balcony, through the lens of graphic design and architectural principles. This project is an homage to my hometown and its balconies, without being exclusively about the subject. It comprises of a set of display typefaces, both of which are inspired by the features of the balcony, in addition to a collection of seven A1 foldable posters. These posters are designed to be read independently and jointly of one another, and come together to create a publication of sorts. The name ‘Mashrabija’ is derived through a merger of the English term for the ‘Mashrabiya’ with the Maltese ‘Muxrabija’.
Inspired by the concept of sunlight and window panes, the slipcase aims to reflect the material of the balconies, namely timber and glass panels, while referring the origins of the balcony through Northern African Mashrabiya patterns.
