Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas
My collection ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ is based on the contrast of the bright and neon lights of Las Vegas and the desert landscape surrounding the city.
I chose the name for my collection after seeing and using the sign that welcomes you as you drive into the city in my visual research. I think this fits well with my project as my choice of glittered and neon yarns definitely bring an element of fabulousness to my collection. Also in my visual research I looked throughly into the shapes, textures and colours of cacti which lead me to create a wide range of cacti inspired knits with my most popular mock rib cactus design appearing plenty in my final collection.
Throughout this project I have had a large influence from country singers which I began listening to while I filled my sketch books. I then poked further into these artists especially ones who are newer to the county music scene, such as Lil Nas X with old town road and Orville Peck. I noticed how flamboyant these artists act and dress and this began my work for my fashion illustrations and garment designs.
I designed and knitted two garments fro this collection. The first being a pair of neon orange striped chaps with fringing down the sides. My other garment is a sweater vest knitted with glittery yarns with a large cactus design on the front and is edged with sparkly red ruffles and mock ribs of a number ‘7’ motif on the collar, representing the lucky number seven on gambling and fruit machines.
As I am focusing on the contrast of the desert and Las Vegas I created two colour palettes: one with more earthy tones and the other containing a number of glittered, neon and bold colours. With the use of my colour palettes and my research into cowboy and country singers clothing, I could successfully create a collection that holds elements from both subjects which could blend together and enhance them both.
