My work is about using objects to tell campaign narratives. I create material things or visual interactions to provoke engagement with an issue, aiming to bring new insight and perspective to the viewer. I chose two campaigns to cover for this degree show:
1. The campaign to lift restrictions on growing Hemp. For this I took the idea of hemp being the Crown Jewels in the world of natural materials and explored the plant’s huge versatility in this regard. I also focused on the ‘baggage’ that comes with hemp being a cousin of marijuana and looked at ways we might encourage the plant to be re-perceived as the climate hero it is.
2. The campaign to legalise Assisted Dying. Here I invited people who had experience of end-of-life issues to a series of sewing workshops. Using a hospital blanket as our canvas, and Victorian Samplers as our inspiration, we stitched our thoughts and insights.
