Shadow Play- Lite living
A mindful collection celebrating light, shadow, colour, nature and landscapes
‘Shadow Play’ is a textile collection dedicated to both fashion and interiors that is inspired by shadows, landscapes and nature. When sunlight bounces onto solid objects an ethereal language of pattern and colour temporarily emerges, sometimes lasting for only a few seconds before disappearing. My body of work is inspired by those magical moments when sunlight lands on objects and creates shadows in our everyday environments
For my collection I have created a range of screen and digital prints. I have tried to be mindful in my process to leave as little negative imprint on the environment as possible. I have been careful in my choice of fabrics, my printing processes and dye processes.
Layering of materials has been an important aspect to my work. I am interested in how different prints can become enhanced by the over-layering of each other. I have found layering can create a depth that results in new patterns, shadows, and colours, that all materialise and create a completely new work.
My range of digital prints have been printed onto silk as well as poly silks to allow for longer sun exposure.
The range of digital prints I have created are to be used for both interiors and fashion. For interiors the work is about bringing the outside in, by which I mean capturing nature and bringing it into the home. Shadows captured outside are reflected inside.
I have also created works for fashion from my digital prints which include mesh clothing, and in the future I would love to create silk clothing.
In my screen-printed work I have created a repeated a pattern to print a 3-metre length of velvet, which I have hand dyed then printed using devoré. In the images displayed it is shown as a curtain, but I have since converted this printed fabric into a Kimono.
I have explored the use of natural dyes in my print work. I have incorporated coffee waste, which I have dyed onto bamboo silk from ‘The Organic Textile Company.’ Where possible I used waste products as a resource for dye, but as I wanted some vibrant colours, I have at times combined my natural dying processes with more traditional processes within the print room. For example, I used discharge printing to incorporate bold and bright colours.
I have also created a range of naturally dyed fabrics that can be converted into interior products such as curtains and cushions.
