'Never has the absence of one act of human kindness meant so much to so many'
Hysteria Clevercloggs 2021.
Hysteria Clevercloggs executes multidisciplinary artworks that are chronological and evocative of her mindset.
Traditional and digital platforms go hand in hand for Hysteria and a journey into the unexpected is never avoided. This unusual academic year has encouraged confidence to promote to and engage with an audience that has been a real-time and virtual one. Covid engineered her entrapment in Australia visiting her gravely ill father who miraculously recovered, and in turn gave four months of invaluable time to reset her mind, body, and soul. Covid is a special sacrifice that has relinquished opportunity to Hysteria Clevercloggs and enabled the multifaceted work; HUG.
HUG is a collection of works under the umbrella of ‘The Global Hug’ presented across social media platforms, born out of a desire to express the lack of touch and intimacy during the pandemic. Instagram is the primary stage for HUG contributions which consist of visual documentation, including film and a sole digital artwork based on a NO ENTRY sign using the three magic letters that make HUG.
The conversation that began on Instagram has sparked offerings from others and in particular, Hysteria’s parents, which in turn has led to her father carving a mammoth grass H U G in their 2-acre paddock in Australia. This Mother HUG is the foundation of the final degree piece and has become a work that pays homage to them and their 51 years of marriage.
A personal journey of disconnection and isolation from loved ones over decades has, for Hysteria, blossomed into a love story and healed many wounds and nurtured deep scars. May this project grow and continue to be cathartic to all who enjoy engaging with it online and may it also continue to be an antidote to this artist’s previous status quo.
