Material Comfort
Material Comfort began with a starting point of Hygee. The Scandinavian lifestyle can be recognised for its positive minimalistic approach towards life known as Hygge. The concept of Hygge focuses around aspects of warmth, cosiness, comfort and enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life. Through the research of this practice, this collection explorers textures, colour and silhouettes that bring comfort to people. Part of this research involved taking part in activities associated with Hygge and capturing them through photography to inspire visual research. This project aims to bring comfort to its consumer and offer an anti-anxiety feeling when worn. Using an earth toned colour palette and a pop of colour mixed with a variety of comforting tactile textures, this project has produced soft yet interesting unique samples. The collection also took inspiration from light and explored how shadows can bring comfort to a room and setting. Whilst also paying close attention to materials used within an environment to bring that cosy feel. This final collection includes a variety of fabric weights, from heavy wool outerwear to lighter weight cotton and merino wool samples. These have been achieved through techniques such as double cloth, blocks and interchanging checks.
