Machine of Living
The Machine of Living mixed media sculpture examines how digitalisation colonises our minds through a multimedia art practice utilising papercraft, video, digitally generated haikus, and projection mapping. My art is inspired by questions about the increasingly digitalised world and the blurring boundaries between the ‘real and the digital worlds—humans and machines become one organism. Technologies can hear, influence, and captivate us without us even realising. The concept of a home has changed with the advances in technologies; everything seems to be getting increasingly digital and mechanised. Our environment is becoming a ‘digitalised machine of living.’
During my studies at the University of Brighton, I have found my passion for innovative digital technologies and mixed media. Whilst writing the research papers and experimenting with various technology, I have discovered that media is much more than just an image on a screen. The most exciting aspects of media are how people interact with it and how media can influence our behaviours and thoughts without us often even realising. The element of behavioural change raises many ethical questions, especially during the current turbulent times in the World with Covid and wars. Many scientists and researchers have contemplated the dangers and the benefits of AI and machines, and so am I in my Final Major Project. My idea sparked from the saying by a famous architect, Le Corbusier, who compared a house with a machine for living in. I believe that a home, and the world in general, has become a digitalised machine of living. The streets are increasingly filled with flashing screens, self-driving cars, and people on their cellphones. The digital singularity is already here.
