Jewellery has always followed a specific niche, allowing the wearer the freedom to express themselves with elegance, but as a maker I always felt a wider purpose, use, or a functional aspect was missing. Clothing always has offered similar fulfilment, but with ulterior aims, to keep the wearer warm, to hide sensitive areas from view or to protect the wearer.
Inspired by multifunctional items such as multi-tools and the rulesets of Chindōgu. My challenge was to give jewellery a purpose on top of its primarily aesthetic nature. To craft a set of rules that could be used to evaluate, develop, and explore the inclusion of purpose into jewellery.
My research is the exploration of items that have fulfilled this implementation of a secondary purpose, understanding methods behind including these ulterior uses, as well as an exploration of designing and rendering these items in computer aided design to assess their viability and usefulness.
I also looked deeply into the difficult technique of Mokume Gane, the process of laminating non-ferrous metals to create starkly contrasted fusions of colour.
