Kate Humphreys
I am a textile designer who specialises in knitwear based in the south east.
These images display some of my final boards from my knitwear collection “Tous Nés Nous”, translating to “All Born Naked”. This collection was heavily influenced by subversive and alternative fashion, specifically looking at the human form and shape, juxtaposing the grotesque with sensuality. Taking the in-between of getting ready, looking at undergarments contorting the body through padding, cinching and pulling one’s flesh.
This body-morphing process led designs to mimic flesh being twisted and crumpled but also to bulge in others. All knitted on a 5-gauge domestic knitting machine in order to sculpt large 3D forms through holding and partial knitting techniques. My yarn choices of Pima Cotton and Mohair contrasted the dense fleshy lumps by being lighter in weight and therefore once placed on the body, the body underneath would be exposed. Utilising sheerness of the knitting or the silhouette of the garment to expose the body underneath while adding lumps in others unflattering positions.
