Warning: The exhibition’s disturbing content may be unsettling to some.
Titled, ‘Why would you want a scan of it?’ (2023) is a hanging installation, that introduces the idea of abortion. The name occasionally is associated with stigma, and the unreported occurrences that are ignored. The work introduces women’s empowerment and the significance of expressing freedom. The title is important because it describes my own judgmental experience when I had an abortion and was asked by people why I wanted a scan of the procedure. The hanging artwork shows a helpless individual going through a horrific ordeal and is made from white, delicate yarn White light from a projector is used and is suspended from the wall to create shadows of the crotchet texture on the wall. In order to create the illusion of the womb, coloured clay is moulded into baby fetuses and placed inside condoms that have been blown up. The white crotchet is intended to present a spider web, and show how women frequently feel confined and constrained, even till this day. Women still endure criticism despite the daily round of abortions. The piece is appropriate for contemporary art because it deals with a subject that is widely discussed and may be related to some people. My work seeks to argue sensitive topics, and in many situations, my conclusions might be highly debatable and phycological. I like to make art that some people might find uncomfortable, but I speak out for the women who had no choice but to be criticized.
