Josie Lister
My final project titled ‘Embodied Making’ explores a way of creating that involves the physicality of the maker into the process. My interest lies in the kinetic processing of thoughts rather than the artwork outcomes in themselves; the haptic sensation of working purely with the hands invites the maker to engage with their senses.
Five verbs were chosen as the starting point for a series of pieces made, each restricted to a two-minute time limit. The use of verbs aims to demonstrate that something as simple as a couple of words can be used to create from. A book containing five chapters of photographs and quotes documents the process of making. In an exhibition, this would be viewed alongside a video which directly captures the sound and movement as I responded to the five chosen verbs. In a world where creatives are encouraged to produce ever increasing volumes within shorter spaces of time, such exercises of physical expression and self-reflection are more vital than ever.
