JIGSAW HERITAGE

My collection, ‘Jigsaw Heritage’  tells the story of my dual British and Caribbean heritage, and relationship with Jamaica, as well as the unique life experience of my grandmother, through printed textiles. The project examines Jamaica through my grandmother’s now fractured lens, and her voyage to the UK toward the end of the Windrush period.

Like many of her generation, my grandmother doesn’t share much about her life in Jamaica. Her mind in recent years has become one tangled enigma, in light of her battle with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. I found myself wanting to learn and understand my culture on my own accord; piecing together the jigsaw puzzle of my heritage from my grandmother’s fragmented memories and shaky handwritten musings.
