Jack Bevan
My name is Jack Bevan, I’m 23 years old and I am currently in my third year at The University of Brighton working towards obtaining my (BA) Animation degree. I have always had a strong passion for creating and would love to someday turn this passion into a full-time career.
I am an extremely motivated animator focused on character development and producing high-quality animation. I have made substantial progress during my course and would love to learn much more about the industry. I want to be able to understand all areas of animation whether that be 3D, 2D or Stop-motion. I personally find that animation within advertising is an area that particularly interests me. It is my ambition in the future to create animations that best cater to my clients’ requests.
I am experienced in creating 2D animations as part of university degree and usually work in Adobe After-Effects. I thoroughly enjoy mind mapping ideas as planning remains an extremely important part of the process whether that be through storyboards, animatics or a pre-written script.
Animatics is my favorite area of the animation process as I love to experiment with different scenes and characters. This has also given me the opportunity to think outside the box. I really have a passion for creating sound design and effects. Every time during my course I reach the stage of sound design I get excited as I love experimenting and creating audio that best suits the animation.
After reading the brief I decided that I wanted to create a 30 second trailer based on an idea that has been stuck in my head for quite some time now. This idea is for a fictional Tv series that I would love to create someday and is called “Time Watchers”.
The animation will feature three children named Sam, Amy and Blake who live in a quiet remote village (Eraville) in the UK. They are soon joined by their American uncle called Joey whose ideologies seem far from that of his niece and nephews. They later discover that their long-lost grandad who mysteriously vanished many years ago is in fact lost somewhere in time, and it is up to them to find out where. Along the way they will encounter many obstacles purposely designed to prevent them from reaching their end goal of making their family whole again.
My research topic will be based on the topic of cinema and tv show trailers and will investigate how trailers are used as a way of luring the audience into watching whatever is being shown on screen. I will also be looking at already existing Tv series such as Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls to see how they have managed to gain such a large following and if there could be any techniques involved of which I may be able to use myself within my final piece. I will begin by jotting down any ideas that I have and then making a storyboard so that I can use it as a template, something to follow when I finally begin animating. I will also be creating each sound element myself. I’m hoping to use mine and my siblings’ voices to act out each character however, if for any reason this doesn’t seem to work effectively then, I will be seeking voice recordings from online freelance actors found on websites such as Fiverr. Before that though I shall write out a full-length script so I can get a better understanding of where I want my trailer to go.
My target audience is predominantly aimed at 15 upwards as the show will contain subjects not suitable for younger viewers. I want each character to come across as unique not only in the way they talk but their mannerism also.
I will be using a mixture of hand drawn frame by frame animation and vector-based background designs. Although, I want to try my hand at other techniques such as Rotoscoping. The reasoning behind this is to hopefully make each character feel much freer flowing and realistic in movement. I want to make this animation shorter as I prefer to aim for quality rather than quantity on this occasion. I also don’t want to venture too far away from my idea and neither do I want to overcomplicate the design process, as I tend to over-think when coming up with ideas which causes me to procrastinate on one topic for too long.
My final goal is to create a fun, exciting looking trailer that has the audience on the edge of their seats and hopefully will leave them wanting more of what they have just seen. I want to push myself well beyond my comfort zone by using frame by frame hand drawn animation, as it is my intention to expand my creative ability beyond what I have learnt within the classroom enabling me to demonstrate not only my skills on a personal level but to display my future potential and proficiency.
