‘The more you look the more you see’, is a concept I enjoy experimenting with within my practice by having elements of my work reveal themselves wherever you focus. To establish such strong feelings of discomfort, boundaries of conventional decency need to be crossed as I aim to subvert expectations and overturn orders.
My work is rooted in research on women’s reproductive health and understanding female pathology, which is the causes and effects of diseases within women. These themes in my work are primarily based on the lack of understanding of female pathology throughout history and even today there is still a significant misunderstanding and a dangerous gap in knowledge regarding female anatomy. Because of this, it is imperative that I work from true pathological sources as my intention is to bring awareness to the continuously overlooked and stigmatised nature of women’s reproductive health.
My inspiration for my work lies in my avid interest in the grotesque. I am drawn to it due to the intense visceral reaction gained from simply viewing unnerving specimens such as internal organs. I am heavily inspired by the Cabinet of Curiosity, which is a private collection of notable objects, similar to a museum. One segment of the Cabinet of Curiosity that has interested me is ‘Scientifica’, an area which preserves specimens of the human anatomy in jars. I feel like this strongly resonates with my interest in the grotesque as it plays a huge role in informing the colour palette of my work. I use colour to portray an unsettling subject with abnormal skin tones working with the grotesque to gain a reaction from the viewer. I use bold colours and abstract forms to express the complex female experience of these diseases and to make a space where people are provoked to reflect upon this. I find the visual aesthetic of my work grotesque and alienlike as well as intriguing.
To further add to this discomfort, I encourage viewers to touch my 3d works (any silicone and latex made), all of which are made to emulate the feeling of human tissue.
The ultimate goal of my artwork is for it to ignite conversations around women’s health issues and to raise awareness. I want to challenge the existing stigma and promote understanding and empathy. Through my work, I hope I can be a part of a wider cultural shift towards promoting awareness and acceptance of the health issues many women face.
