The focus of Studio 12 this year was to explore the limitations of contemporary housing as we made designs for a new London Housing Block. The Housing Block aimed to improve the space it fills, providing a prototype for a ‘different kind of city’. Parameters of ‘home’ were explored through the use of volume, aiming to challenge the defined relations between neighbours and routes in and out of the city. This combined with the addition of a ‘work’ programme within the Housing Block, enabled the opportunity to increase housing and employment opportunities for the area, whilst also challenging conventional practices of ‘Live/Work’ in the built environment.
My designs for the Housing Block saw the introduction of a Doctor’s Surgery, Community Group Room and 26, 2 bedroom units to site. The building’s design focused on level changes and ‘carving’ in and out of the form to create an inviting facade to the street edge.
