Hannah Drozd
My work satirises the objectification of women through the irreverent deconstruction of the female body as it becomes a site of de-eroticised but multisensory play. The imagery in my compositions originate from my everyday surroundings, online source material and content from magazines. As my work concerns objectification on social media, its content and titling is largely influenced by online interactions I encounter, for example particular comments posted on Instagram, which enhances the satirical element that is important to my work.
A busy, spontaneous approach is taken with the majority of my work, intended to overwhelm and heighten visual stimulation for the viewer due to the continuous discovery of new objects and details within the pieces. I create smaller, more isolated works with more of a focal point alongside these, allowing moments of calm within chaos.
I enjoy working with an expansive range of colour and find I tend to gravitate towards using a complementary, saturated colour palette in my work as I find that paired with the subject matter, it results in a visually exciting piece whilst complementing its humorous nature. Other palettes across the work include psychedelic, earthy and monochromatic ones with some sharing additional flesh tones, intended to provide a bodily sensation.
Drawing forms an important part of my practice; sketching with charcoal on paper provides preparatory material for paintings, yet I also develop these larger scale on canvas to be works in their own right, as the medium is well suited to the spontaneity and detail of the subject matter I work with.
