Genni Debney is a Moving Image artist that has centred her work around the exploration of the human condition. Her practice uses the perspective of hand-made puppets, inanimate objects, and other unconventional viewpoints to study themes like body image, apathy, gender, and sexuality.
Over the pandemic, Genni has realised the importance of putting joy in whatever she does, especially when creating art. There are times where commenting on our world requires absolute seriousness. But there are other times where play and joy can offer just as much. This is what SPACECRAFT offers. This piece was created through the desire to jump from our very isolated and locked-down world, and escape into a fantasy that provides a space for play and possibility. The viewer is invited to join in with the adventure and have agency within the storyline by interacting with the characters, investigating the narrative, and affecting how the story ends. Because Genni took the form of a non-linear film, the audience has their own sense of ownership of the film. And hopefully, this film will provide a moment of play, and enjoyment for enjoyments sake, in a world where joy isn’t always taken seriously.
