‘Ein Buch Bitte!’ is a series of Food Books created to explore food as its own design material, and all the associated senses which makes it such a unique and varied medium. Food design is a contemporary discipline that incorporates the process of design and research that creates innovative products related to food.
In my creative practice I wanted to view food as a product, designing it as if it were more than just something to be consumed. To me its more than just presenting food on a plate, such as in high end restaurants, but to see food as its own design material, and with it comes all the additional senses that make food such a unique medium to play with. I wanted my books to remain fun pieces of design. I titled this food book series ‘Ein Buch Bitte!’ translating to ‘One Book Please!’, as personally I love the excitement of ordering in a new language and the rehearsal that accompanies the performance, again making the food into a product rather than just a dish. I pictured someone ordering one of the food books in a loud bar, exclaiming, ‘Ein Buch Bitte!’.
In order to exhibit my food designs I researched the traditional Japanese craft of making fake food ‘Sampuru’. This led me to exhibiting my designs in silicone as I wanted it to be a tactile, floppy, squishy, interactive model.
Overall, this practice has cemented my personal obsession with food design. Following this I am going to study ‘Food Design and Innovation’ at SPD in Milan, Italy where I am to become a professional Food Designer and be part of this exciting new design movement.
