Emily Pearce
Emily Pearce is currently completing her BA (Hons) Photography course. During this time, she has developed a vast interest in neurodiversity and society’s relationship with those on the spectrum. She is especially interested in adults who have experienced childhood traumas and how they have affected them later in life. Clouds are a visual metaphor for this subject, which Emily will continue to research by using photography and other art forms to broaden awareness in this area.
Daydreamer – Solidarity to fight segregation (Photo collection)
As an adult on the spectrum, I’ve encountered distressing disappointments within the education system and from those who continue the cycle of stigma. To show solidarity rather than segregation, I’m using this project as a form of art therapy, collecting portraits of people with similar experiences to help myself and others overcome trauma and isolation. Clouds and the colour blue are significant symbols to express daydreaming, a visual metaphor of a distracted mind. I wanted to develop the concept of daydreaming and how it can relate to alternative abilities, by double exposing film with a subject and clouds. Using uncontrollable daydreaming to explain the feeling of neurodivergence, while emphasising the invisibility in our conditions. Exploring how we still feel unjustified within society, despite our diagnosis.
Daydreamer – Daydreaming simulation (short film)
Alongside these portraits, I have created a second part to this piece, a short film to represent how we lose time in a Daydream. This has been completed by recording time lapses of clouds, creating a visually positive safe space where the observer can daydream and let their imagination fly.
