My practice investigates the ways we capture and communicate intimate, unspoken thoughts through text and image. Through printmaking, I use the subtly of layering to explore how text becomes the voice made visible on a page – creating a new way of communicating. Here I am interested in the silent, internal voice becoming heard through image and surface.
I am currently using found text from snippets of overheard conversations or from graffitied walls and doors in bathroom cubicles. I combine the text with abstract marks, borrowing textures from the surfaces where this text is found. I rewrite fragments, collage photographically, exploring how I can make imagery that feels somehow linked to the original but also re-made through my own hand. I am excited by the quality of photolithography and the way that found text transfers itself across the paper surface – mimicking the wall.
I am also exploring these ideas through moving image and lo-fi animation, bringing the viewer back to the time-based experience of writing. Through this, I seek to highlight things that can be hard to say out loud and the places people have felt safe to write these thoughts, feelings and confessions down.
