Ella Loudon

This collection “Uncontrollable Sensations,” is a project based on the medical condition Endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition that affects women of any age. It is where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in unusual places, such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The condition is long-term and has many symptoms including severe pain, heavy menstrual bleeding and sometimes difficulty getting pregnant. It can also lead to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Since Endometriosis is a condition that I could have, I wanted to create a collection that would raise awareness of the condition and encourage other women to speak out about their own experiences. The visual inspiration for my project came from the oval shapes of the Endometriosis growths. I took photos of chia seeds, plants, and pomegranate seeds to develop my ideas. I focused on producing woven fabrics that portrayed different sensory outcomes by using a mixture of synthetic and natural yarns alongside embroidery techniques for textural contrast. My colour palette was inspired by the bright and futuristic colours of the Metaverse that I had seen at modern-day immersive exhibitions.
