Dorothy Squibb
Dorothy Squibb’s Se rīdere ġecymeþ on midne dæᵹ (The knight comes at noon) is a live sculpture piece that takes place every day at the exhibition site from 2nd-12th of June at noon. The artist enters the space dressed in a knights under garments, she proceeds to get changed into a suit of 9th century Anglo-saxon armour. Now transformed into a knight she picks up a 6ft long sword and patrols the exhibition building for some time.
The suit of amour and sword were all designed and carefully constructed by the artist herself which took countless hours of hand stitching, forging, grinding, and constructing the suit of maille. Squibb’s work has a surreal atmosphere as we see the character of a knight take its place in the modern world and the dedication of the artist to this fantastical character leaves the viewer feeling both amused and perplexed – this work observes the existence of the lonely knight in a world in which he has no place.
