The Meat Paradox is a psychological conflict between an individual’s dietary and lifestyle preferences for consuming meat and other animal products. Whilst simultaneously having a moral response to the suffering of animals. As Humans, we actively avoid information and situations which will increase psychological discomfort. In addition to your own personal attempts to justify the consumption of animal products. The advertising and marketing techniques of the industries that benefit from using animals makes this a lot easier for the consumer. An example of this which you can recognise in my paintings is the use of mascots. I find it unsettling how brands use these mascots as a way to detach their product as far as they can from the realities within the meat and dairy industry. For example, just today roughly 17.5 million animals have been killed for food just in the United Kingdom alone. But these brands can show us a cute bunny next to their product in hopes we can just forget?
In many cases throughout history artworks have acted as catalysts for opening discussions on challenging subjects. Through my mixed media paintings, I aim to flip the intentions of the advertisements on themselves in order to shed light and disrupt the paradoxical space, in which most humans have fallen into.
