The 27 Club is a collection of well-known individuals who have lost their lives at the young age of 27. With many being musicians; fans and media outlets often wonder what direction these artists would have taken if they had survived. One of the most talked about artists in the 27 Club is Amy Winehouse. Even before she lost her battle with substance abuse, Winehouse was surrounded by a lot of speculation as to how she would be able to keep her fans interested in her music if she had continued on her trajectory. Posthumous releases, which is a release of an album after a musician’s death, are one of the ways which artists keep their legacy going after they have passed away and Winehouses’ Lioness: Hidden Treasure is one of the most well-known of these. When researching, it was clear that Island Record (Winehouses’ label,) wanted to publish this album in order to make more money. This can be seen as there are some “original recordings” or “reimagined” songs which had been altered to make the album seem more cohesive and increase the number of tracks on the album. I hope to be able to create a better reflection of what Amy may have wanted for this album, if she was able to complete it, by taking into consideration her personal style, rather than what her label thought would bring in the most revenue. In doing so, I wish to show how it is an artist who needs to take ownership and be given the creative licence to create the whole of an album as they feel it should be and not their label.
