My project is an exploration into themes of ancient mythology and storytelling, with a focus on how these subjects interact with nature.
My idea of the ancient world is one where humans live harmoniously with the earth – each serving and protecting the other. Seeing a society with declining respect for the environment made we wonder if losing many of our mythological traditions has negatively affected our relationship with nature. My aim here is to create symbolic objects that uphold ancient, folkloric values, conveying messages that promote a love for the earth using stories imagery inspired by nature.
My work surrounds Irish mythology, an ancient tradition of folklore that is often overlooked. Through researching the deities of this pantheon, I aim to tell their forgotten stories, and create objects that provide a sense of memorial and remembrance for them, whilst also presenting a connection to the natural world through my illustrations and stories.
