PodJams are a product I have created for my Master’s Studio project at the University of Brighton. As a teacher, these are created to help reach and educate my pupils and anyone who is interested in issues pertaining to design or sustainability. Hopefully they objectively demonstrate how learning can take place in more ways than our rigid syllabi suggest, and that learning methods are unique to the preferences of the individual. The idea is that we can learn more through lyrics and atmospherics, and the audible medium is not used enough, especially with older learners, in the age of the podcast. This medium can promote thought, engagement and encourage creativity, to target positive changes. There are too many negative narratives which are watering down the impact and urgency of (young people’s) involvement. Music, song and poetry can play a role in re-engaging those who are unaware or want to know more, without overwhelming them with how big the problems are. The challenge is designing them to be deemed good enough and cool enough to encourage movement towards more sustainable better futures.
