How can I render a storyverse of my creation outside of the book format?
I created a piece of wearable art combining Textiles and Illustration. This piece is based on a character from a story I wrote. While the story is not accessible to the viewer in text form or blatantly discernible within the piece, it was essential to the creation of this piece of work.
I previously completed a BA in Illustration at Falmouth University where I focused on young audience. My BA centred around communicating someone else’s words or vision, that was our role as visual communicators. While there is beauty in that, finding one’s own voice first is an important step I feel I missed- for me that was this project, this MA.
My experience and skillset lied in drawing and digital illustration primarily, meaning I had to develop several new skills for this project. The main new areas I explored were sewing, painting, lino printing and pattern design. Learning these allowed me to imagine and explore my illustration in more contexts than traditional 2D formats.
I enjoyed exploring a story through illustration outside of the book format, I feel it has pushed my work somewhere new and interesting. I am excited to continue to further the techniques I have learnt during this project, and with that, continue to change my work in unexpected ways. When I started this MA, I needed to see my work in new contexts to revitalize its potential- that is something I feel I have achieved and will positively impact everything I make going forward.
