BA(Hons) Digital Music and Sound Arts
Degree Show BA DMSA 2022
… only the brave
When the world around us closes in and seems inhospitable and haunted by plague, war and isolation, students seek their own worlds, losing themselves in the inner realm of emotions, in dreamworlds of games and movies or through close encounters with nature (or of the third kind). These wanderings, of course, always bear the risk of never being able to find a way back to what once seemed normal, and made such perfect sense.
Thus the works in this year’s BA (Hons) Digital Music and Sound Arts Degree Show display a colourful artistry, animated by struggle, perseverance, resilience, excitement and vivid imagination.
In arduous times, students build fictional universes – from fractal patterns, abstract shapes, imagined characters or physical objects, striving to capture their state of mind, their nostalgic inclinations, their secret longings; or some distinct perspective, or curious experience.
Some imagine cosmic horror scenarios, with Martians on the run, others ethereal and otherworldly entities, some conjure interactive soundscapes on small inhabited worlds; yet others find solace in Jazz, Norse mythology, Hip Hop – or in their own sonic imagination.
Dystopian tales are spun that question the achievements of the human race; brain activities are measured by means of computer interfacing, alien visitors are impersonated in exciting live performances.
And all these projects come of course suitably scored and underscored by the students’ own sound and music creation.
